What every tunesmith seems to really want to do is sing. Good thing Rahsaan Patterson, coauthor of hits by Brandy and Tevin Campbell, got his chance. Weaving his tenor through the sort of organic retro-soul arrangements embraced by artists like D'Angelo, Maxwell, and Tony Toni Tone, Patterson honors R&B's past without wallowing in it. One walks away from this impressive eponymous debut wishing he himself had sung the numbers that others have benefited from.
