Mandela (1996)

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Lead Performance: Sidney Poitier; Genres: Soundtracks, World

Summarizing the musical legacy of a nation in 72 minutes, especially South Africa's, is impossible, but the spirited soundtrack to Mandela covers a lot of ground. Opening with a cut matching young singer Jennifer Jones with seasoned trumpeter Hugh Masakela, the album includes bits of Cedric Gradus Samson's tasty film score, vintage South African tracks, even the Specials' 1984 tune ''Nelson Mandela.'' In all, the record conveys the jubilant cultural pulse of a place that once symbolized repression.
