Soulful Jared Leto plays Steve Prefontaine, the world-class, Oregon-born distance runner who was killed in an auto accident in 1975 at the age of 24. His was an extraordinary short life of determination and charisma. But by the time this earnest mock documentary by Hoop Dreams' Steve James and Peter Gilbert finishes serving its various constituents (including the participating Prefontaine family and Nike, whose shoes Pre was one of the first to wear), the biopic ends up with the safe, ''nice'' look of a TV movie.
