The freckles are deceptive -- they scream all-American girl. But there's something hidden beneath the surface when Lara Flynn Boyle takes on babe-dom. She's been Donna, the serious babe next door (in Twin Peaks); Kris, the murderous secretarial babe (in The Temp); Suzanne, the scheming married babe (in Red Rock West); Stacy, the ditsy girlfriend babe (in Wayne's World); and Alex, the coed menage a trois babe (in Threesome).
But this variety of roles doesn't bother Boyle, 25; she's just thrilled to be acting. ''I'm not in a Julia Roberts place or a Winona Ryder place,'' she says. ''I don't have any responsibility. I don't make $11 million a picture. I can take a lot more zany parts in smaller movies.'' Add to those parts Tanya, the working-wife babe, in the new-to-video romantic caper The Big Squeeze (see review on page 78) and Hillary, the suburban thrill-seeking babe, in the crime drama Farmer & Chase, which just opened in theaters.
Boyle, who grew up near Wrigley Field, attended acting workshops and eventually won a scholarship to Chicago's prestigious Academy for the Arts. She moved to L.A. the day after graduating high school and almost immediately was cast in Twin Peaks. ''She was so glamorous in Twin Peaks and so unglamorous in my movie,'' says Threesome director Andrew Fleming. ''She's smarter and tougher than she looks, and she's completely fearless.''
Home for Boyle is a house in the San Fernando Valley where she lives with her mom, Sally (her parents divorced when she was 5), four dogs, and 11 TVs (''It's from being an only child; I love the noise, the company''). She's just completed work on two movies: Dogwater, a comedy directed by and starring David Schwimmer, and Afterglow, a drama with Nick Nolte. ''I'm a very home person,'' she says, explaining that once she returns from location, it's tough getting her out of the house. Especially the kitchen -- where she feeds her junk-food habit. She laughs when asked if she heads to the gym to maintain her seductive shape. What, and have to get up off the couch? Not this babe.
