Celeste Wood is suing the cigarette manufacturers she claims caused her husband's death; it's Rankin Fitch's job to investigate would-be jurors for the tobacco companies. The only one he can't figure is Nicholas Easter, whose true identity and motives are long withheld from the reader. While this generates considerable suspense, it also adds to the book's main problem -- a lack of clearly sympathetic characters.
