Trailers are already heralding spring releases, generating boos and belly laughs and determining the buzz that could make or break opening weekends. Here's our take on some noteworthy sneak peeks:

ROMY & MICHELE'S HIGH SCHOOL REUNION If the priceless one-liners delivered by dorkesses Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow (sample: ''I was so lucky getting mono. That was, like, the best diet ever'') are any harbinger of the rest of this comedy, then we're in for a treat. The trailer's only problem: Not enough Janeane Garofalo. A-

VOLCANO You'd think Twentieth Century Fox would have tried to distinguish its volcano movie from Dante's Peak by showing off its superior cast (including Tommy Lee Jones, Don Cheadle, and Stanley Tucci). Instead, the trailer promises nothing more than one cool lava-down-the-street shot and less-than-explosive explosions. C

LIAR LIAR It looks like Jim Carrey, our favorite pratfaller, is back. Whether he's skidding across the floor, being thrown from a crane, or owning up to some elevator flatulence, Carrey -- forced into total honesty by a mystical happenstance -- seems like a bad kid with Tourette's syndrome. You'd be lying if you said the movie didn't look funny. B

THAT OLD FEELING You can see what Universal's aiming for: a pinch of The First Wives Club (Bette Midler spotting a face-lift patient on sight) with a dash of The Birdcage (dig that mambo soundtrack). The one thing you don't hear in theaters is laughs. C-

ABSOLUTE POWER Obviously inspired by the opening credits of Seven, Castle Rock's exciting spot is a trailer by way of Cuisinart, filled with guns, drums, and Clint Eastwood action heroics. Although the movie is leisurely paced, the trailer promises slam-bang action. So much for truth in advertising. A
