CHILDREN OF THE REVOLUTION

Geoffrey Rush (Shine) joins Judy Davis and Sam Neill in a black comedy from Down Under about a young Communist who conceives Stalin's illegitimate son. ''It's absurd,'' says producer Tristram Miall. ''[She's] trying to get the revolution going in Australia and nobody is interested.... They all go home when the pubs close.'' (May 1)

AUSTIN POWERS

In the '60s, a spy was put on ice and neither shaken nor stirred for 30 years. In 1997, he thaws out, only to discover that his swingin' ways and groovy duds are grossly out of sync. ''He's trying to find love with Elizabeth Hurley,'' says screenwriter Mike Myers (who plays both the title role and the villain). ''But he's into, 'Let's go shag, shall we?' It doesn't work that way anymore.''(May 2)

TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N.M.

''Winnebagos are very narrow,'' Kiefer Sutherland offers, recalling challenges he faced in his $8.5 million feature directorial debut. Much of this '70s-action homage, in which he, Vincent Gallo, and Mykelti Williamson blaze a trail to Mexico, takes place in an RV. ''This film is represent-ative of why I loved Freebie and the Bean, The French Connection, and Reservoir Dogs,'' he says. (May 2)
