Up until the climax, when the title volcano, a pristine snowcapped mountain, erupts with the catastrophic boom of a nuclear blast, Dante's Peak provides a series of routine photogenic terrors. As the geologist hero, Pierce Brosnan has dimples, grace, charm; he's not a movie star, exactly -- he looks as if he should be hosting something. Here, he hosts an anemic rehash of Jaws and Twister. Sometimes there's a thin line between Armageddon and the Weather Channel.
