House Arrest (1996)

EW's GRADE
D-

Details Rateds: PG, PG-13; Genre: Comedy; With: Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Pollak

If only life could be as simple as this predictable and sugarcoated (even criminally negligent) take on The Parent Trap. In an unintentional salute to Darwinism, a gawky teen (Kyle Howard) — tormented by the school bully, overlooked by the class babe (Party of Five's Jennifer Love Hewitt) — and his lisping little sister (Amy Sakasitz) imprison their parents (Curtis and Pollak) in the basement after hearing they plan to separate. Recognizing the obvious logic at work, their friends (including the bully and the babe) bring over their own troubled parents for some forced group therapy amid surveillance equipment, cemented windows, and a booby-trapped yard. Anyone who doesn't already know how House Arrestends deserves to rent it.
