Devotion+Doubt (1997)

Details Lead Performance: Richard Buckner

If his acclaimed debut, Bloomed, showed talent in full flower, Richard Buckner blossoms even more brilliantly on Devotion+doubt. The singer-songwriter explores such truths as heartache, bitterness, and redemption in a voice that's equal parts bearlike rumble and whiskey-soaked whisper. The a cappella ''Fater'' (half country-gospel dirge, half Native American incantation) mesmerizes, but the sweetest surprise is ''On Travelling,'' featuring a chirping cricket.
