LOVE JONES (R) Darius (Larenz Tate), a young Chicago stud, melts the indifference of the cool, cerebral Nina (Nia Long). With its portrait of contemporary black bohemia, love jones offers something that shouldn't, by now, be this novel: the sight of middle-class African-Americans hanging out in a movie just the way white people do -- playing pool, flirting, etc. Tate and Long convince you they're seriously in love. Even when the film turns into a black update of boy-meets-girl cliches, its erotic moodiness remains fresh.
