Watch as small-town schoolteacher Samantha (Geena Davis) recovers from amnesia that dangerous cinematic condition and becomes La Femme Nikita. Watch as she and the affably low-rent PI she hires (Samuel L. Jackson) make Houdiniesque escapes from perils that move from expectedly implausible to in-your-face outlandish. (Nothing, not even shrinking them to TV size, can diminish their intensity.) Continue to watch while your jaw keeps dropping until, suddenly, you get it: The Long Kiss Goodnight seems like a send-up of those movies that, like heroin, require bigger and bigger doses to give the same special-effects high. You may then wonder if the director (and Davis' hubby) Renny Harlin intended to make a parody.
