What do you do when your ex-lover wants to borrow money to pay for his phone sex with another woman? This and other modern dilemmas are tackled in Walking and Talking, first-time writer-director Nicole Holofcener's savvy comedy. Anne Heche (Donnie Brasco) and Catherine Keener (who was hilarious as a spacey actress in Living in Oblivion) delight as two old pals one about to be married, the other in between boyfriends. Like an American Eric Rohmer, Holofcener affectionately observes the often messy interactions between men and women in a film that's quite funny but also unafraid to be sentimental or bittersweet. If you're looking for a refreshing antidote to alien invasions and car crashes, this is it.
