Dreams really do come true. Many of the visions in Arthur C. Clarke's 1968 sci-fi masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey (the basis for the Stanley Kubrick film of the same year, whose Oscar-nominated screenplay Clarke cowrote) have indeed come to pass, from the hardware capability boasted by supercomputer HAL to automated voice-identification systems. Okay, others -- like colonization of the moon -- didn't catch on so well. Yet 79-year-old Clarke, a Sri Lanka resident who's authored almost as many novels as his age, keeps right on dreaming. The final installment in his Space Odyssey quartet has rocketed up the chart, fueled by 185,000 copies and 3 pressruns.
