THE DEVIL'S OWN (R) In Alan J. Pakula's quiet, shades-of-gray drama, we get the story of two powerfully opposing heroes. Brad Pitt, a veteran IRA terrorist, arrives in New York under the name Rory Devaney to purchase a cargo of stinger missiles. He is put up in the Staten Island home of Tom O'Meara (Harrison Ford), an affable Irish-American cop without a clue as to Rory's true identity or mission. Pitt, in what may be his most supple performance to date, plays Rory as a silky-voiced Belfast hunk who's all cold steel underneath. And Ford summons a powerful sorrow and disgust at those who'd give in to bloodshed. The Devil's Own is larded with movie-ish situations, but the film's brooding intrigue comes from the way it gets us to sympathize with both men's points of view, even as we can see they're on a collision course.
