Take a Look Over Your Shoulder (1997)

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Lead Performance: Warren G; Genre: R&B

Three years after ushering in the g-funk era, Warren G. puts out Take a Look Over Your Shoulder, which confirms his talent for springy beats and jazzily conversational rapping. (Note to Def Jam: The sinuously catchy ''Annie Mae'' shoulda been the first single.) Warren's cover of ''I Shot the Sheriff'' is superfluous, but his fresh take on the Isley Brothers' ''For the Sake of Love'' — retitled ''Smokin' Me Out'' and featuring Ronald Isley — is pretty great.
