For many performers, Madison Avenue represents a rest stop on the road to Hollywood. ''Most actors wouldn't want to end up there in the long run,'' says adman Donny Deutsch, of Deutsch, Inc., who once cast Ransom's Delroy Lindo for a spot and rejected Big Night's Stanley Tucci for another. ''But commercials are a great place to start.'' Andy Dick (NewsRadio), who has appeared in more than 50 spots, fondly remembers his first big commercial break. He was napping when plucked from a roomful of extras by director Joe Sedelmaier (of fast-talking FedEx fame), after another actor had bombed. In the spot, for Alaska Airlines, ''Joe told me to take a sandwich out, look at it, and put it back. That's how I got my SAG card. I've been paid ever since.'' Even though Method men such as Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman have ad credits (American Motors and Volkswagen, respectively), says Deutsch, ''lots of actors would like to forget about them.'' Here's one way to remember: Link the actors with their products.
