Carrey's Lying High

This week's box office numbers

Sometimes, the truth doesn't hurt. Jim Carrey's honest-for-a-day Liar Liar lawyer blew past 1990's record-holding Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to post the biggest March opening ever. Liar is also the second-best opening for Carrey in a lead role, trailing only Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls — which means showbiz bean counters can forgive his dark interlude in The Cable Guy. Demonstrating crossover muscle, the biopic Selena scored a very respectable second-place showing. And Crash promptly did just that: David Cronenberg's controversial roadside-sex story earned just $2,179 per theater.
