If the screenwriters finish the script this summer, as planned, they are hoping for a winter '98 release. Such timing would coincide nicely with Kaufman's old prophecy that he would fake his own death and come back on his 50th birthday — Jan. 17, 1999. "It better be in the theaters before Andy's return," deadpans Alexander. "That way, he can be booked for all the talk shows."

Says Danza: "Andy wanted everyone to say, 'Is he dead or isn't he?' All he ever wanted was for us to be talking about him. So he's the last one laughing."
