''Bitch'' (1997)

EW's GRADE
B-

Details Lead Performance: Meredith Brooks; Genre: Pop

The title of Meredith Brooks' debut single, "Bitch", implies otherwise, but lyrically, this singer-songwriter isn't just another angry young lady with a jagged little pill. She's sinner, saint, and bitch — and she demands that her guy embrace them all. That's no commonplace pop sentiment, but, musically, the tune has a familiar ring: manic choruses, relatively restrained verses, edgy vocals, and a subtle hip-hop undercurrent. You oughta know where you've heard that before. B-
