Details Writer: Chuck Eddy; Genre: Music

Rock critics don't come much more wild-eyed than Chris Eddy (an EW contributor). Here he plays connect-the-dots with songs, artists, and musical trends, making outrageous connections faster than flipping a radio dial. In The Accidental Evolution of Rock 'N' Roll: A Misguided Tour Through Popular Music, Eddy barrels through chapters, mixing inspired hokum, trivia, and left-field insights in equal proportion. Even his slapdash scholarship works for him: By (not always intentionally) misquoting lyrics, he reinforces his contention that sloppy serendipity, not craftsmanship, lies behind most rock milestones. Compared with his gleeful word fandangos, other rock critics are still learning the twist. A-
