This solemn first novel, I Was Amelia Earhart, envisions pioneering pilot Amelia Earhart, and her navigator, Fred Noonan, surviving on a Pacific island after their 1937 disappearance. Jane Mendelsohn provides some evocative moments, but her Earhart is a touchy-feely narcissist, an implausible makeover of the matter-of-fact aviator. C
