BOOGIE NIGHTS
Starring Mark Wahlberg, Julianne Moore, William H. Macy, Burt Reynolds, Don Cheadle
Director Paul Thomas Anderson
Opens Aug. 29
Wahlberg shows off more than his Calvins. Directed and written by 26-year-old Anderson (Hard Eight), the $15 million film intertwines the stories of a varied cast of characters working in Los Angeles' porno industry in the 1970s. It may sound like Short Cuts Undressed, but don't get the wrong idea. ''If the movie is clear in what it's about, hopefully it won't be misinterpreted,'' says Anderson, who insists the real story is the characters' relationships. Unfortunately, the MPAA has already wagged a no-no finger at the film's first poster, which featured a camera jutting from a man's unzipped pants. The movie was also moved from its original May slot so that the 180-minute running time could be pared down and the content of the film could be altered in hopes of receiving an R rating. UPSIDE Both the '70s and pornography are hot topics. DOWNSIDE R-rated porn is an oxymoron.
