BUDDY

Starring Rene Russo, Alan Cumming

Director Caroline Thompson

Opens June 6

Russo's got a monkey on her back, a parrot on her shoulder, and a gorilla by her side in this story based on the life of Gertrude Lintz, a wealthy matron who, during the '20s, adopted primates, dressed them at Bergdorf Goodman, and took them to the movies. How did Russo feel about breaking the first rule of show business and working with animals? ''I've never had a cat, birds I can't relate to, and I've been bitten twice by monkeys, so I have to admit, I read the script and I went, 'I don't think so.''' After months of preparation with the monkeys and an animal trainer, Russo admits she bonded with her odoriferous costars; still, she says, compared with her Ransom costar Mel Gibson, ''they don't play Scrabble as well.'' UPSIDE At a cost of about $15 million, Buddy has the family market to itself — at least in June. DOWNSIDE Audiences may be distracted by the obvious differences between the real monkeys and the animatronic gorilla
