Director Susan Seidelman's charming meditation on the nature of identity is a quintessential '80s artifact (Madonna versus yuppies) that, miraculously, doesn't feel at all dated (except for the music, of course). This new laser edition of Desperately Seeking Susan comes decked out in a crisp letterboxed transfer, extra footage deleted from the ending, and nonstop audio commentary by Seidelman and producers Midge Sandford, Sarah Pillsbury, and Barbra Boyle. Think of it as an informative coffee klatch; among other things, one learns that Susan's inspiration was Jacques Rivette's extremely obscure 1974 art-house flick Celine and Julie Go Boating. Who ever would have guessed? A-
