Costner lazily eases into his patented Rugged Tough Guy routine here, as an aging pitcher distracted by on-the-mound thoughts of his estranged girlfriend (a blond and bland Preston). Director Sam Raimi handles the crackling baseball sequences with flair, but he's reined in by a schmaltz-ridden screenplay that could use a few good curveballs. C
