Though the small-town-boy-meets-big-city conceit has been overworked, Ed's Next Move manages to freshen it. The initial move that Ed (Matt Ross) makes is from a Wisconsin farm to New York City, where his lack of cynicism stuns the natives. His next one, though, is tougher: striking up a romance with the beautiful, aloof woman (Callie Thorne) who catches his eye. Keeping Ed's Manhattan assimilation nicely understated, Ross makes his character's naivete charming rather than rubelike and Ed's embarrassment at the Midwest's signature symbols (like cows and cheese) rings true. A theatrical flyover, this indie film has a pleasing light touch. B
