When Chase Phillips (Helen Mirren) returns home to Martha's Vineyard after a mental collapse, her husband (Beau Bridges) hires a mother's helper (Kyra Sedgwick) who's coming to grips with her own mother's suicide. This Showtime Original movie, a solid directorial debut for Kevin Bacon, earned good buzz on the festival circuit but ran only briefly in theaters. On video, the domestic theatrics of Losing Chase play quite well as Mirren, scowling and tart-tongued as a woman beyond the verge of a nervous breakdown, shatters years of stoicism. B
