This five-track EP, Shady Lane, includes a pair of alternate cuts from Pavement's last album, Brighten the Corners: the first, a faster and measurably improved take on ''Type Slowly'' and the other, a slight reworking of the wistful title track. But it's the jokey tension of ''Cherry Area'' and the goofily self-conscious ''No Tan Lines'' that make this collection a Shady and irresistible deal. A-
