Details Lead Performance: Faith No More

Faith No More excel at making chaos sound compelling. Their seventh full-lengther, Album of the Year, tempers Mike Patton's he-man vocals and a wall of punk-funk metal with tracks that bring down the noise. Patton sounds misty-eyed on ''Helpless,'' while the band sprinkles ''She Loves Me Not'' with touches of gospel and soulful harmonies. And surprise — they flaunt this tender side with nary a hint of irony. B
