John Hiatt rules when it comes to writing quirky roots rockers with killer melodies; in Little Head he proves he can be one silky soulful singer as well. His is no conventionally pretty voice, yet when he takes on the smooth R&B of ''My Sweet Girl,'' he smolders with more finesse than anyone this blue-eyed side of Al Green. B+
