It might be possible to forgive NYC band Madder Rose for abandoning their formidable bubble-grunge sound to test the more commercially inviting waters of electronica. But their new album, Tragic Magic, is frustratingly half-baked and suffers from near-funereal pacing. Fortunately, Mary Lorson's lighter-than-air vocals counter even the most sedative of tracks. B-
