Lead Performance: The Charlatans UK; Genre: Rock
B
Talk about triumph over adversity. The Charlatans confront death (keyboardist Rob Collins was killed in a car crash last July) with grace, dignity, and new creative commitment in Tellin' Stories. Wheezy warbler Tim Burgess whose fascination with hip-hop is distancing the band from its hazy Madchester past floats ghostlike over fat Farfisa melodies, many originally tracked by Collins. And the grief is tangible on ''North Country Boy'' and ''How Can You Leave Us.'' B
