Writer: Peter Mayle; Genre: Fiction

In Peter Mayle's fourth novel, Chasing Cezanne, Andre Kelly, a freelance photographer on assignment in France, witnesses the apparent theft of Cezanne's Woman With Melons. Along with Lucy, his agent and (quelle surprise) imminent girlfriend, and a suave art dealer named Cyrus Pine, Kelly unravels an intricate, ingenious fine-art scam. Mon Dieu! His adventure is accompanied by detailed descriptions of exotic locales and cuisines, smatterings of French, and a superfluity of adjectives. Either you'll feel smug about catching all the references to the world of the ridiculously rich, or you'll think this book is nothing but merde. Probably the latter. C
