Belinda Carlisle wanted to make classic '70s California pop in the tradition of Fleetwood Mac, but the ex-Go-Go forgot that beneath the crystalline production of those records were actual songs and emotions. The slickly produced A Woman & a Man lacks both, and Carlisle has neither the voice nor personality to overcome her album's cold, emotionally sterile core. C-
