The Lateness of the Hour

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Lead Performance: Eric Matthews

Though his second solo album, The Lateness of the Hour, boasts as impressively diverse an array of instruments as on his debut — Eric Matthews himself plays guitar, trumpet, piano, harpsichord, and flugelhorn — the sound is more subtle. His past songs seemed almost an excuse for layers of orchestration, while this smooth, lovely set of melancholia is never overwhelmed by its ambitions. B+
