Though his second solo album, The Lateness of the Hour, boasts as impressively diverse an array of instruments as on his debut Eric Matthews himself plays guitar, trumpet, piano, harpsichord, and flugelhorn the sound is more subtle. His past songs seemed almost an excuse for layers of orchestration, while this smooth, lovely set of melancholia is never overwhelmed by its ambitions. B+
