The Beautician and the Beast offers a variation on The Nanny theme starring Fran Drescher as a night-school beauty instructor from Queens who's mistakenly hired to tutor the royal brats of Slovetzia. Her three R's are rollers, Revlon, and Rego Park, but what she lacks in class and classroom training, she makes up for in streetwise sense. Strangely, Timothy Dalton's dictator Beast, all bluster and bluff, is more endearing than anyone else in this fractured fairy tale; Drescher's babe-with-a-heart-of-gold-card shtick gets laughs, but the small screen reminds us that Fran is really a sitcom queen.
