Lead Performance: Various Artists

The Threepenny Opera composer is eclectically feted in this Hal Willner-supervised CD, September Songs: The Music of Kurt Weill (not to be confused with his '85 Weill tribute, Lost in the Stars). You've got your lugubrious songwriter's songwriters (Nick Cave, PJ Harvey) as well as more offbeat recruitees like Betty Carter and the Persuasions. And for historical grounding, there are tracks from Weill's wife, Lotte Lenya, and playwright collaborator Bertolt Brecht. Lastly, for ironic prescience, the late William Burroughs reads ''What Keeps Mankind Alive?'' B+
