Japan's favorite avant-lounge duo, Pizzicato Five, returns with a more club-oriented set, but their blend of '60s kitsch and savvy pop-culture references remains intact in Happy End of the World, giving the Cardigans a run for the retro-hip money. And while chanteuse Maki Nomiya's breezy vocals recall a spacier age of Pucci prints and That Girl, the Five are at their best when eras collide, as on ''The Earth Goes Around,'' with its canny blend of drum-and-bass rhythms and Sergio Mendes-style bossa nova.
