Lovesongs for Underdogs (1997)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Lead Performance: Tanya Donelly

The Rod McKuenesque title notwithstanding, this debut solo project from Ur-alt-rocker Tanya Donelly reflects a too-thoughtful intelligence: Her songs on Lovesongs for Underdogs show the strain of effort. But the few tracks that reveal an emotional core (''Landspeed Song'') are irresistible — and make you wish she had spent more time outside and less time studying. B
