What a difference a day makes when those little hours are spent driving into Manhattan in a secondhand station wagon with your wacky family to find out why someone named Sandy wrote your husband a love letter. Following the trail of marital infidelity in this eccentric charmer is a very funny ensemble of Long Island misfits headed by Anne Meara, priceless as the mall matriarch, and Hope Davis, who plays the lovely, disbelieving wife. All writer-director Greg Mottola's debut The Daytrippers needs is a hip soundtrack instead of the aimless, tepid score, but the rewind-that-scene dialogue is as sharp as the unexpected and satisfying turns on the bumpy road to romantic enlightenment.
