Faithful Joyce Carol Oates readers may find hints of her insight, but others may be dazed from too many debasing, uncomfortable sexual encounters, lurid deaths, improbable circumstances, and just plain weird behavior. Despite the highly stylized prose and earnest tone, the characters remain remote; their actions reflect the kind of grim fascination usually reserved for crime scenes. C-
