L.A. CONFIDENTIAL (R) Voluptuously engrossing. Adapted from the James Ellroy novel, Curtis Hanson's '50s Los Angeles crime thriller lets us know from the start that the California dream is a billboard plastered over a rats' nest. The story, a neo-Chandler maze of sordidness, brings together dirty cops, gangsters, politicians, and tabloid blackmailers. Yet there's a quasi-white knight, too: Edward Exley, a rookie officer played by the startlingly handsome Guy Pearce, who dramatizes intellectual vivacity with more power than any actor in years. With its plot that zigs and zags like knife slashes, its cynicism stoked to the melting point, L.A. Confidential brings the thrill of corruption crackingly to life. A
