A bafflingly diverse (almost random) collection of artists pay tribute to the Boss on this 28-track, two-CD set, One Step Up/Two Steps Back: The Songs of Bruce Springsteen and they mostly pull it off. The performers' good-intentioned sincerity is engaging, and the material is certainly strong enough to survive more than a few too-faithful interpretations. Best tracks: Marshall Crenshaw's ''All or Nothin' at All,'' David Bowie's 1975 recording of ''It's Hard to Be a Saint in the City,'' and Sonny Burgess' ''Tiger Rose.'' B
