Book Review: 'Puppies'

Details Writer: William Wegman; Genre: Coffee Table

Is it art, or just some sicko tarting up helpless pooches? The question dogs Wegman, who's made his name snapping weimaraners in human drag. But this album makes it moot — so clearly beloved are the young, helpless, and mostly naked pets that gambol within. They're pretty cheap shots — what Polaroid dunderhead can't make puppies look precious? Wegman, however, knows just the right backdrop to bring out their warm-flannel skin (the crushed blue velvet is particularly fetching), just the right activities — like tossing 'em exuberantly into the air — to bring out the essence of their innermost canine souls: blind unyielding trust.
