Maybe in the future, though: Rand speaks of C.S. Lewis' Narnia books as a touchstone, and Robyn also has more personal projects in mind. "I do have a desire to communicate things a little more clearly," he says. "Not like 'Jesus Christ is your savior, believe in him,' but more of how I see the world. I don't think Riven does that."

If there is a soul in the new machine, these are the guys to find it. And, contrary to Robyn's opinion, the spookily graceful Riven is a revelatory start.
