Confidential combines pop nuggets from the '40s and '50s with a healthy dose of West Coast ''cool'' jazz to successfully re-create the mood of postwar L.A. Excellent period pieces, including Dean Martin's ''The Christmas Blues'' and Kay Starr's ''Wheel of Fortune,'' make this an essential purchase for any aspiring lounge lizard. B+
