Alienated by her parents' daily arguments, a flaxen-haired 7-year-old (Ferguson) stops speaking. Writer-director Rolf de Heer doesn't aspire to match the poignancy of Kolya or Ponette his heroine's dramatic protest amounts to little more than an elaborate temper tantrum but as we hear her inner monologue, the universe inside a little girl's head seems at first a precocious wonder, then more and more the melodramatic musings (''I make my own peace'') of a thoroughly therapized adult.
