BRUSHWORK: If Hollywood ever dares to remake Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, it won't be hard casting Kim Novak's role. In Making Faces (Little, Brown; $29.95), a new how-to by Kevyn Aucoin, makeup artist to the divas, he transforms Gwyneth Paltrow into a doppelganger of the actress, arched brows and all. It's just one of the sleight-of-mascara tricks pulled off by Aucoin in his picture book, which also features an unusually vulnerable-looking Demi Moore as Ingrid Bergman; Bergman's daughter, Isabella Rossellini, imperiously mimicking a late-'60s Barbra Streisand; and legendary daughter Lisa Marie Presley as Marilyn Monroe. ''The Lisa Marie shot surprises most people,'' Aucoin says, ''but she's got those heavy lids and the same mouth. I saw Marilyn right away.'' If there's a message in Aucoin's book, it's for women to change their makeup as often as their wardrobes. ''These stars are admired because they take chances,'' he says. ''They don't get stuck in a look. It's the stars who have held on to the same look who haven't grown.''
