Details Lead Performance: David Holmes

To Irish DJ Holmes, electronica is not pretty; in fact, it's pretty gnarly. His first American album is a grimy hip-hop soundscape that, like DJ Shadow's Endtroducing, avoids the hospital-wing sterility of the genre. Holmes loves airy cinematic beauty, but he tempers it with frisky Latin percussion, gritty electric guitar (a version of Serge Gainsbourg's ''Don't Die Just Yet''), sound-collage effects, and snippets of crazed street people. It's a stirring symphony of sleaze. A-
